Every Scout and Scouting Unit Deserves a Trained Commissioner
Most Scouters that desire to become a Commissioner might think they know everything needed to fill the position. After all, by the time you take on this role in your Scouting Career, you "Have Been There and Done That" through service in a Pack, Troop, Crew, Ship, or Post, and perhaps even a District committee position. Still throughout your Scouting career, I bet you took the training for the new volunteer role you stepped into.

Take your Training to a higher level at the Philmont Training Center

The Philmont Training Center (PTC) is the only national volunteer training center for the Boy Scouts of America. Since 1950, PTC has provided a unique environment for training volunteer and professional leaders, and a fun family program for every member of the family. Each year, more than 6,000 Scouters and family members attend PTC.

Each conference features the latest tools and techniques, audiovisuals, discussions, idea sharing, and activities led by a faculty of experienced Scouters. All registered Scouters are invited to attend training center courses; council approval is no longer required.

Philmont offers Commissioners more specific training several times a year; Unit Commissioners, Roundtable Commissioners, District Commissioners, Council Commissioners and Assistant Council Commissioners. Check out the Philmont Training Page and download a copy of the annual PTC Conference Brochure. You can register for training at Philmont through your MyScouting account. www.philmonttrainingcenter.org

Doctorate of Commissioner Science

The commissioner is the mainstay for the Scouting program administration. It is commissioner service that ensures that units are healthy, productive, and assist in the growth of the program.

The College of Commissioner Science program is designed to have a commissioner learn, through a series of training classes, followed by work experiences to ensure a quality program throughout Scouting. This training will take a number of years to complete. The commissioner finalizes his/her training with an approved thesis or project for the benefit of the Scouting program. This assists both new commissioners as they learn, and seasoned commissioners as they train others.

Below are the Doctorate of Commissioner Science thesis’ to date from our Mid-America Council Commissioners:
